Book hangover
A book hangover is that flat, restless feeling after finishing a book you loved so much that nothing else appeals yet.
You’ve finished, but your head is still in the book, and starting a new one feels wrong. People describe rereading the last chapter, flipping back to page one, or losing an evening to the fan wiki and every interview the author has ever given.
It’s different from a reading slump. In a slump, you can’t get into anything. With a book hangover you still want to read, you just want to keep reading that one.
Most fixes are ways of staying in that world a little longer: a companion novella, the author’s notes, fan art or fanfiction, or talking it through with a friend who just finished it too. The other option is a clean break. Pick something as different as you can find.
Book hangover: common questions
What is the difference between a book hangover and a reading slump?
A book hangover comes from one book you loved and makes it hard to move on to the next. A reading slump is broader. Nothing appeals at all, and it isn’t tied to a particular book.
How do you cure a book hangover?
Either stay in the world a bit longer with novellas, interviews, fan work or a friend who’s read it, or start fresh with a book in a completely different genre.
