Love triangle
A love triangle is a romance setup where one character has to choose between two others.
The good ones aren’t really about which person is hotter. Each option stands for a different future for the main character: a different life, a different set of values, a different version of who they could become. So the choice ends up saying something about the character, and not just about who they end up with.
The bad ones feel decided from the start. If the story obviously favours one option from chapter one, the other one only exists to drag things out, and readers can tell. Another common problem is a main character who does nothing and just waits to be chosen.
Triangles almost always split readers into teams, and publishers like that, because a fandom arguing about who’s right is a fandom talking about the book. Some newer books skip the choice entirely and end with all three together.
Love triangle: common questions
Why are love triangles so controversial?
Readers get attached to one outcome, so whichever way it goes, about half of them end up disappointed. A triangle that’s obviously decided from the start annoys everyone.
What makes a love triangle work?
Both options have to be real possibilities, and the choice should say something about who the main character is becoming, not just who they find more attractive.
