Buddy read
A buddy read is when two or more people read the same book at the same time and stop at agreed points to talk about it.
It’s like a smaller, more casual book club. A couple of friends, a group chat, or a few people from a Discord server pick a book and a pace, say a few chapters a day or a section a week, and talk about it as they go instead of waiting until the end.
Agreeing on the pace matters most. If someone reads ahead, every message becomes a spoiler risk for whoever’s behind. Most groups set checkpoints (everyone reads to the end of part two, and nobody talks about anything past that) and mark any message that goes further.
Buddy reads work especially well for books people struggle with on their own, like long fantasy series with lots of worldbuilding, classics, or anything with a slow start. Knowing someone’s waiting to talk about chapter nine is a good reason to get there.
Buddy read: common questions
How does a buddy read work?
Pick a book, agree how far you’ll read by when, and talk about it at each checkpoint. Most happen in a group chat or on Discord rather than at set meeting times.
How do you avoid spoilers in a buddy read?
Agree on checkpoints ahead of time and don’t discuss anything past the current one. If you read ahead, label your messages clearly or save them until everyone catches up.
